About Light Structures

  • Light Structures was established in 2001 as a spin off from the Norwegian Defense Research Establishment.
  • The company is a supplier of structural monitoring systems using optical fiber sensors.
  • They provide turnkey solutions, including design, equipment supply, commissioning, and after-sales service.
  • Their products for ships include the Hull Stress Monitoring System, which monitors real-time stress on the ship’s hull, monitoring of sloshing in LNG fuel tanks, monitoring of ice roads on ICE Class ships, and various other applications.
  • Apart from ships, they also have a track record of adoption in floating offshore wind turbines and structural monitoring for bridges.
  • The SENSIFIB Hull Stress Monitoring System from Light Structures has obtained the SMART (SHM) Tier 3 Prodcut Design Assessment (PDA) Certificate from ABS.

Structural Monitoring System’s Features

  • Turnkey solutions from design, equipment supply, commissioning, to after-sales service.
  • Analyzing collected data to identify durability and potential risks, facilitating improved ship durability, effective maintenance scheduling, and repair planning.
  • Taking appropriate measures to prevent accidents or ship damage when abnormal stress or fatigue is detected.
  • The sensors use optical fiber sensors, allowing for higher precision measurements compared to traditional strain gauges.
  • Short-base sensors within the optical fiber sensor category are used, eliminating the need for welding during installation, making it suitable for hazardous areas.
  • With an IP68 waterproof rating, it is also possible to install them in ballast tanks.
